Ambition Doesn’t Run the Company

This morning, I came across something that stopped me in my tracks:

There is a difference between ambition and assignment.

Ambition asks, How do I get ahead?

Assignment asks, How do I stay aligned?

And I realized I’ve spent a lot of time letting those two things work side by side without recognizing which one was actually in charge.

I am ambitious. I always have been. Ambition helped me build a 35-year career. It helped me lead, achieve, rebuild after disappointment, and keep going when I wasn’t sure what was next.

Ambition isn’t the enemy.

It just doesn’t get to run the company anymore.

Because I believe God has given me an assignment.

My job isn’t to make it impressive enough for the world to notice. My job is to steward it with devotion.

That hit differently today.

For the past few years, I’ve been building. Searching. Creating. Revising. Asking what’s next? over and over again.

And somewhere along the way, the thing I was searching for actually got built.

The message became clear.

The work took shape.

The assignment became visible.

And still, that ambitious part of me kept whispering:

What else should we do?

What else does this need?

How do we make it bigger?

Maybe those aren’t the questions for this season.

Maybe the question is simply:

How faithfully am I stewarding what God has already put in my hands?

That doesn't mean I stop dreaming.

It doesn't mean I stop growing.

It doesn't mean numbers, revenue, reach, or results don't matter.

It means they don't lead.

Ambition can serve the assignment. It just can't run the company.

That distinction feels like freedom to me.

Freedom from constantly chasing what's next.

Freedom from measuring significance by applause.

Freedom from believing that more automatically means better.

Freedom from all the shoulds and need tos that create so much mental clutter.

Maybe FOCUS isn't about working harder on fewer things.

Maybe it's about staying faithful to the assignment and letting God decide what comes from it.

So that's what I'm practicing now.

Less chasing.

More stewarding.

Less building for the sake of building.

More living what I've already built.

Less looking around the room to see who noticed.

More quietly and confidently walking into it knowing:

I know my assignment.

And that is enough for today.

A question for you

What if the pressure you're feeling isn't because you haven't figured out what's next?

What if you already know your assignment—and it's simply time to stop chasing and start stewarding it?

Your next step: Write down what you believe has been placed in your hands in this season.

Then ask yourself one question:

Am I faithfully tending to it—or am I distracted by what looks more impressive?
